What Is Post-Mint Damage (PMD) on Coins? How to Identify It

-
What Is Post-Mint Damage (PMD) on Coins? Post-mint damage (PMD) is any damage or alteration that occurs to a coin after it leaves the mint. This damage can happen during circulation, improper storage, handling, or intentional attempts to modify a coin. Common examples of post-mint damage include scratches, dents, bent edges, corrosion, chemical damage, and unusual discoloration. By halting penny production, the Treasury anticipates saving about $56 million annually.   The penny's diminished purchasing power and limited use in daily transactions have also contributed to the decision. With the rise of digital payments an...

It began operations in 1793 and produced copper, silver, and gold coins. The first branch mint was established in 1835 in Charlotte, North Carolina, followed by others in New Orleans, Louisiana; Dahlonega, Georgia; and San Francisco, California.
